LV8729 stepper motor driver module in the common StepStick style format

Note this part replaces the previous part supplied for orders prior to 30 March 2021.  If you purchased prior to 30 Mar 2021 the reference information is available here: Discontinued Products

(This version has the adjustment pot on the top side otherwise they are functionally identical)

Note: 16 Aug 2020: A customer received one of these from us with bent pins.  From this date forward I will be opening these prior to shipping to ensure this does not happen again.  So if you wonder why it was already opened I did it.

  • Plug in replacement for A4988 & DRV8825 on any board that accepts StepStick format drivers
  • up to 1/128 microstepping
  • quiet
  • maximum 2.0A if adequately cooled according to supplier

Quiet stepper motor Drivers LV8729

  • Input voltage: 6-36V
  • Max current: 1.5A (Module supplier says 2A but they copy / pasted a bunch of other incorrect information so I don’t trust them)
  • Micro Stepping: 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128
  • Heat sink included so USE IT

Module pins:

Make sure you orient it correctly in your controller board or you may kill it

Microstep settings:

Micro stepping jumpers
M1 M2 M3
1 full step 0 0 0
1/2 step 1 0 0
1/4 step 0 1 0
1/8 step 1 1 0
1/16 step 0 0 1
1/32 step 1 0 1
1/64 step 0 1 1
1/128 step 1 1 1

Current settings

The output motor current is set according to VREF.  VRef is measured Viewed from the top

  • Rotate the potentiometer clockwise to decrease vRef & anticlockwise to increase vRef
  • Be gentle, it is a small surface mounted potentiometer
  • Precautions:
    • Adjust without the motors connected to avoid potential damage to your motors (once you have your desired settings then connect your motors)
    • If your motors run hot afterwards, recheck your calculations, dial it back..

The sense resistors on these modules are R220 = 0.22 ohms so the formula for setting vRef per the datasheet is:

  • I = (VREF / 5) / 0.22
  • so: VREF = I * 1.1
  • Example: if your desired current is 1.2A:
    • VRef = 1.2 * 1.1 = 1.32V
